Jen Yang/Tianjie Yang, originally from Shan Dong, China, now calls Nova Scotia home. This transition from the hustle of urban life to the serenity of the Canadian countryside has profoundly shaped her artistic journey.
Jen, specializing in acrylic painting, harmoniously blends the boldness of post-impressionism with the intricacies of modern art. Her art is marked by vibrant hues and a fluid, dripping technique that infuses their work with a dynamic texture reminiscent of oil paintings. They introduce depth and dimension using gel, paste, and the palette knife while applying rubbing alcohol resist techniques that bring complexity to the backgrounds.
The transition from China to Canada has been a journey of self-discovery for Tianjie, unveiling her essence and artistic aspirations. This personal evolution is reflected in their art—where once bold brushstrokes and abstract textures dominated, now detailed forms emerge, representing their quest for authenticity amid chaos. Her creations aim to uncover our fast-paced society's overlooked beauty and love, prompting viewers to reconnect with life's simple, genuine joys.
Her work is inspired by the pristine beauty of nature, the emotional impact of everyday experiences, and the essence of existence. Her collaborations have involved contributions to Saltscapes magazine and the Guyborough Journal and showcasing her art in local exhibitions at the Angyle Fine Art Gallery and Teichert Art Gallery. Additionally, she has actively participated in the Art in Residence program in Sherbrooke.
In addition to painting, Tianjie actively participates in various speaking engagements, helping more people understand the joy of art and the differences between Eastern and Western art. A presentation at Maritime Business School in 2019 highlighted the contrasting art developments between the East and West and the impact of cultural influences, integrating the artist into a broader narrative that values life's zeal. 2024, she will also speak at the Maple Retirement Home in Sherbrooke, explaining art and life to older people and how to appreciate the happiness art brings even at an advanced age. Her works, collected by a diverse group ranging from police officers to musicians, underscore the belief that art should be accessible to everyone, challenging the conventions of gallery spaces and collector circles.
Her art invites viewers to rediscover life's fundamental, unadulterated beauty, establishing a connection with the passionate and loving essence within us all.
